Pre-arranged Pair techniques – Ohyo Gumite

Technically, pair techniques are part of Kumite. The more elementary pair techniques are termed Yakusoku Kumite and more advanced pairs Ohyo Gumite Prearranged pair techniques are an important part of the BTKA’s syllabus. They all have the same basic etiquette to them, which must be strictly observed at all times.

18Prearranged pairs have many functions, including improvement of distance and timing. It is essential, once full speed is developed, that the techniques are performed with full realism and commitment, otherwise their value is lost.


Ohyo Gumite 1 – Attacker (right) Defender (left)

1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step forward into right fighting stance.
3 Slide right foot forward and punch left Gyakuzuki Jodan.
5 – Step up with the left leg and sweep Ashi Barai to the front leg using the right leg. Punch left Gyakuzuki to the kidney and Kiai.
6 -?Step back into fighting stance.
7 – Step slowly back to attention stance.
1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step back into left fighting stance.
4 –Lean back into Neko Ashi stance and block punch using left Shuto.
6 – Pivot clockwise on the right leg back into fighting stance.
7 Step slowly back to attention stance.


Ohyo Gumite 2 – Attacker (left) Defender (left)

1 – Attention Stance
2 – Step forward into left fighting stance.
3 – Step forward and punch right Jodan Tsukki, Kiai.
5 – Get up into fighting stance. 6. Step slowly back to attention stance.

1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step back into left fighting stance.
4 – Step to the right with the right leg and twist 90 into left Neko-Ashi. Bring up left hand blocking attacker’s punch with open Haisho Uke, simultaneously striking right Haito Chudan. Pull both hands back onto the hips and transfer weight onto left leg (Gyaku-neko-ashi). Grab opponents arm with both hands; left hand grabbing the wrist, right hand grabbing the upper arm. Kick right Ura Mawashigeri Jodan. Without placing right leg on floor, sweep attackers right leg away from him, pulling on the arm at the same time. Pull attacker in close keeping shoulder off floor and twisting arm joint against the knee. Pin down with right knee and strike right Seiken to the face. Kiai.
5 – Step back into fighting stance.
6 – Step slowly back to attention stance.

1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step forward into left fighting stance.
3 – Step forward and punch right Jodan Tsukki, Kiai. a Get up into fighting stance.
6 – Step slowly back to attention stance.

2 – Step back into left fighting stance.
4 – Step out with the left leg and put right leg round into Shiko Dachi avoiding punch. Strike left Tettsui to the rib cage. Step out with the left leg into Gyakuzuki stance and strike right Tettsui down to the base of the neck. Step forward past the attacker’s back (left) leg, pivot anti-clockwise on the right leg and sweep left Ashi Barai to the back leg. As attacker falls to the floor, step in with the right leg and punch right Seiken to the face. Kiai.
5 – Step back into fighting stance.
6 – Step slowly back to attention stance.


Ohyo Gumite 4 – Attacker (left) Defender (left)

I – Attention Stance.
2 – Step forward into left fighting stance.
3 – Step forward changing guard, punch left Gyakuzuki Chudan and retract.
5 – Step forward Surikomi Maegeri Chudan, kicking with the right 1 leg, Kiai.
7 – Get up onto knee. . Rise slowly up to attention stance.
1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step back into left fighting stance.
4 – Step back and block right Uchi Uke and retract.
6 – Step out with the left leg and pivot into Shiko Dachi, avoiding kick. Push kick aside using left open palm. Strike right Haito to attacker’s ribs, then right Uraken to the back of the head. Grab hold of collar with the left hand, drop onto right knee and strike right Shuto to the back of the right knee, pulling attacker down, and keeping hold of collar. Strike right Shuto to the face, Kiai.
8 – Rise slowly up to attention stance.


Ohyo Gumite 5 – Attacker (left) Defender (left)

1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step forward into left fighting stance.
3 – Step forward Surikomi Maegeri Chudan, kicking with the left leg
5 – Punch right Gyakuzuki Jodan.
7 – Step up with right leg, sweep left Ashi Barai to the right leg. Kick right Mawashigeri Jodan/Chudan (depending on defender’s guard) and Kiai.
8 – Step back into fighting stance
9 – Step slowly up to attention stance.
1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step back into left fighting stance.
4 – Step back one complete step.
6 – Lean back avoiding punch, push punch aside with right Shuto.
8 – Pivot anti-clockwise on the left leg into fighting stance.
9 – Step slowly up to attention stance.


Ohyo Gumite 6 – Attacker (left) Defender (left)

1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step forward into left fighting stance.
3 – Step forward kicking right Maegeri Chudan.
4 – Step forward kicking left Mawashigeri Jodan.
6 – Pull right leg to the left (Taisabaki) blocking kick with left open palm. Punch right Gyakuzuki to the kidney. Grab collar with right hand, push right knee with right foot (instep) taking attacker down to the right (do not let go of collar). Pin with left knee, punch left Jodan Tsukki. Kiai,
7 – Step back into fighting stance.
8 – Step slowly up to attention stance.
1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step back into left fighting stance.
3 – Step back into right fighting stance.
4 – Step back into left fighting stance.
5 – Step forward kicking right Maegeri Chudan. Kiai.
7 – Roll over and up onto fighting stance.
8 – Step slowly up to attention stance.


Ohyo Gurnite 7 – Attacker (right) Defender (right)

1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step forward into right fighting stance.
3 – Lunge punch right Tobikomizuki Jodan. Kiai.
5 – Punch left Gyakuzuki Jodan. Kiai.
7 – Step back into fighting stance. 8. Step slowly up to attention stance.
1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step back into right fighting stance.
4 – Block punch with right Uraken Uke.
6 – Block punch with right Empi Uke. Slide forward in Shiko Dachi and punch right Seiken to the right knee. Slide forward striking right Empi, reinforced, to the stomach. Push attacker’s right knee out using the right knee and strike right Naito reinforced. Kiai.
7 – Step back into fighting stance.
8 – Step slowly up to attention stance.


Ohyo Gumite 8– Attacker (left) Defender (right)

1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step forward into left fighting stance.
3 – Step forward kicking right Maegeri Chudan.
5 – Step back blocking punch with right Shuto. Change Shuto into
wrist grip and pull forward. Kick right Kingeri, snap back and kick right Kakato Jodan to the back of the head. Kiai. Place right foot to the floor going over attacker’s head and using left Teisho against the attacker’s right arm, force him to the floor. Holding attacker’s right wrist with your right hand, pull arm upwards. Place left knee on his right shoulder blade and punch left Oizuki to the back of the head. Kiai.
6 – Step back into fighting stance. 7. Step slowly up to attention stance.
1 – Attention Stance.
2 – Step back into right fighting stance.
4 – Step back avoiding kick. Immediately step forward punching right Jodan Tsukki. Kiai.
6 – Roll over and up into fighting stance.
7 – Step slowly up to attention stance.
